THE CULT HIT BLOOMS

This was my second time watching THE GARDENING CLUB, and as it moved from the studio space to the main stage at New Wimbledon Theatre, where it played a special performance for one night only, it is still an absolute triumph.

From the moment it begins, writers Carleigh McRitchie and Bella Wright's smart, witty, and powerful story takes root and doesn't let go. WIth a modern pop-rock score that is just bursting with energy, this is a show that has everything: heart, humour, and a streak of glorious rebellion.

I was utterly captivated by the five women at the centre of this story, and their brave journey to fight for reproductive rights in 1960s Savannah. The script is a masterpiece of sharp writing, finding a perfect balance between hilarious, cheeky innuendos and truly touching moments of heart-breaking emotion.

The entire cast is simply sensational, bringing this fierce group of friends to life with powerful vocals and performances. Hannah Greensmith as Sheila gives a performance that starts with cautious vulnerability before blossoming completely. I found her journey captivating to watch.

Emma Wallace is defiant as Phoebe, driving the narrative with her ambition, whilst Emma Espada was honest and open as Maggie. Olivia Taylor Quinn gave a dynamic performance as Betty, opening act 2 with an explosively hilarious portrayal of self love!

Lola Garlick and Richie Paisley were adorably innocent as Vicki and Miles, showcasing a young love story that blooms throughout.

I was deeply impressed with the entire cast though. Each seemed to really live the piece, giving believability and depth to the characters.

Director Tara Noonan has crafted a production that sparkles with slick transitions and creative staging that keeps the pace tight. The set design from Evie Jones is functional and clever, evoking the era without ever feeling cluttered.

This show has a deep meaning, and although set 60 years ago it really shines a light on women's rights and issues that are still ever-present in today's world. The story was arresting and interesting, and I could feel myself smiling throughout because I was enjoying ot so much,

I loved the way the ending almost turned the audience into active participants in a powerful movement.

This production isn't perfect, but it doesn't need to be yet. This is exactly how good theatre is made - with a proper development process that evolves the piece. I'd love to see this show recieve some funding and progress even more. It deserves an extended run at a London venue such as Southwark Playhouse.

It's safe to say that I have absolutely fallen in love with this new musical. I am excited to see it grow and reach even bigger stages. It's a show that feels both timely and timeless, and every musical theatre fan needs to join the club.

Believe me when I say, this is definitely not the last we've seen of THE GARDENING CLUB.

All views are my own and I pride myself on being honest, fair and free from influence. Theatre is subjective and it is important to remember that all views expressed are just those of one person.

My ticket for this performance of The Gardening Club was gifted by New Wimbledon Theatre who invited me to watch the show in exchange for my honest review. The fact that my ticket was gifted played no part in the content of my review or the star rating given.
