TINSEL, FESTIVE FUN, AND A LAP DANCE!
LITTLE MISS CHRISTMAS arrives at Southwark Playhouse with a wink and a bauble, and for the most part the show earns earns its festive glow. Anchored by a winning turn from Patti Boo Rae, the production knows exactly what kind of evening it wants to be: brisk, warm-hearted and lightly irreverent, with enough sincerity to stop the tinsel from feeling cheap.
Boo Rae is the show’s north star. She carries the material with an easy authority, blending comic timing with a disarming openness that invites the audience in rather than playing out at them. There’s a generosity to the performance that keeps the piece buoyant, even when the writing occasionally leans into familiar seasonal beats. Around her, the production design is tidy and imaginative, making good use of the intimate space without overburdening it with festive clutter.
Where the show slightly loses its way for me was in its on screen pre-recorded elements. Unfortunately I felt that these moments, although essential to allow for costume changes, had a habit of interrupting the live momentum just as it was beginning to sparkle. Each pause feels minor in isolation, but cumulatively they soften the show’s pace, muting the snap that live performance does best.
Boo Rae is a charismatic performer whose star definitely shines when in front of an audience. With a glorious singing voice, I especially loved her rendition of Santa Baby. Another highlight was her using an audience member as Santa, and promptly giving him a lap dance!
The premise of this being a beauty pagent works well, with the different categories bringing magnificently fun costumes. Boo Rae's competitor is played by different guests each night and we were gifted with a performance from Duane Nasis, whose costume left very little to the imagination indeed!
Overall, this is a likeable, well-judged Christmas offering. It may not always sleigh at full speed, but it glides amiably enough, leaving you in good cheer and appreciative of Boo Rae’s central, luminous performance.
This is a seasonal treat that's definitely worth seeing. LITTLE MISS CHRISTMAS continues performances at Southwark Playhouse until Saturday 3rd January. Click here to book tickets.

My ticket for this performance of Little Miss Christmas was gifted by Chloe Nelkin Consulting who invited me to watch the show in exchange for my honest review. The fact that my ticket was gifted played no part in the content of my review or the star rating given.
