A DIVINE FAMILY DRAMA!
It is not every day that a fringe production feels so staggeringly monumental in its message and execution, but Noctis Theatre Company has delivered a true powerhouse with GOD IS DEAD.
This is theatre that grabs you by the collar, holds you captive, and forces you to stare into the abyss of our collective failures. And all of this is done with an absolutely breathtaking flair for the dramatic.
Writers Matthias Moret and Fanny Le Pironnec have crafted a narrative that is both epic and intimately human. The writing is the standout star of the show here. Every line is a finely-tuned weapon, loaded with decades of buried resentments and unspoken secrets, delivered with surgical precision. They have built a seemingly impenetrable ivory tower for their family of privileged siblings, only to systematically dismantle it piece by piece with the return of a fifth sibling. The tension is so thick you could cut it with a knife, and the suspense builds to a crescendo that left me completely floored.
The creativity on display here is nothing short of inspired. The play's core metaphor - a family's luxurious world collapsing while the real world outside burns - is not just clever; it's a chilling, prescient warning. There is a confident, almost audacious quality to the storytelling. A razor-sharp social commentary, mixed with a haunting unease.
The direction, also helmed by Moret and Le Pironnec, is a masterclass in controlled chaos. They used the intimate space of Theatro Technis to their advantage, trapping the audience in the suffocating opulence of the family's world. This is so much more than a story you watch; it's a world you inhabit. The result is a theatrical experience that is both profoundly unsettling and deeply affecting.
Alongside the powerful pairing of Moret and Le Pironnec, the piece was brought to life by the arresting performances of Victoria Sasso, Tifffany King, and Miguel Mota. Each performer both commanded the stage and generously shared it with profound serenity. It is a priviledge to witness such a talented group of individuals tell a story with such truth. This is ensemble theatre at it's very best.
As Theo, Sasso is the leader of the family who wonderfully portrays the tunnel vision of the character. Their inability to shift viewpoint is somehow intoxicating, leaving viewers breathless. I adored King's Prisca, who seemed to see the positive in everything, moving events forward to avoid confrontation in a slightly comical way.
Mota is in some ways the voice of reason as Jacob, although the way he tries to get his message across is highly flawed. I adored the way you knew something epic was coming with his arrival and the way you could see he was carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders was astonishing.
As Florence, Le Pironnec is inquisitive and eccentric but also very naive. She wants to know everything, but I'm not quite sure she fully understands what's going on around her! Moret's Marcus is quite egotistical and self-centered, whilst still being charming and likeable.
This is a show that deserves to be seen. A searing, brilliant piece of new writing that will stay with you long after the curtain falls. I was personally completely mesmerised by the gripping and provocative story unfolding in front of me, and I found it to be a very sobering experience.
I have seen previous productions from this team and for me, Noctis Theatre Company are one of the most ambitious, creative, and exciting theatre companies around. To find out more about them, their productions, and tour dates click here to head to their website.
GOD IS DEAD was playing its London premiere as part of the Voila Festival, but I'm certain this play will be making a return soon.

All views are my own and I pride myself on being honest, fair and free from influence. Theatre is subjective and it is important to remember that all views expressed are just those of one person.
My ticket for this performance of God Is Dead was gifted by Noctis Theatre Company who invited me to watch the show in exchange for my honest review. The fact that my ticket was gifted played no part in the content of my review or the star rating given.
