REVIEW: DECLAN EGAN - A MILLION DREAMS @ THE CRAZY COQS

🎭 Declan Egan: A Million Dreams

📍 The Crazy Coqs, 21 Sherwood Street, London, W1F 7ED

🗓 Monday 27th May 2024

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A SHINING SUPERSTAR

Declan Egan is an international musical theatre star and has played such roles as Elder Price on the US tour of Book of Mormon and Frank-N-Furter on the German tour of Rocky Horror Show. Most recently he starred as Bob Gaudio in the West End revival of Jersey Boys in a critically acclaimed performance.

This week he took to the stage of The Crazy Coqs in the heart of Theatreland for his one man cabaret show A MILLION DREAMS. In the striking art deco space, this gloriously versatile performer gave a show which was both intimate and fun.

Egan has a stage presence and personality which really draws you to him. The warmth he gives out exudes across the space and he instantly wins your heart whether you're a firm fan of his or it's your first time seeing him.

The cabaret show was a real mixture of show tunes and pop songs and was energetic, camp and above all fun. Egan shared stories of his career, beginning in his native Australia, which has seen him perform in prestigious venues across the globe. These moments were heartwarming and engaging.

Egan managed to hold the audience in the palm of his hand throughout. In this sort of relaxed venue it is easy for audience members to be distracted by things such as drinks, phones and friends, but each and every person in attendance was completely in the moment and sharing in the fabulous atmosphere created by this consummate performer.

It's not often you hear Miley Cyrus performed one minute and Sweet Transvestite from Rocky Horror the next, but I was there for it and loved every second! Fans of Egan's performance in Jersey Boys were treated to a beautifully elegant rendition of Cry for Me which stole my heart.

From the opening notes of his first song Larger Than Life, Egan put on a fabulous show which just got better and better and as he belted out Britney Spears and gave the gayest version of Turn It Off I've ever seen (and that's saying something!) Egan was living his best life and it was joyous to be in the room and bathe in his incredible talent.

Supported on the piano by the wonderful Cerys McKenna, when Egan sang a ballad I just wanted to close my eyes and lose myself in his glorious tone and his astonishing quality to really feel the meaning in the words of a song.

The performance concluded with the mashup I didn't know I ever wanted, but now lives rent free in my mind - Oh, What a Night! and C'est La Vie! Who would have thought of merging The Four Seasons with B*Witched? Genius!

Egan will shortly begin touring the UK as Corny Collins in Hairspray. The show opens in Manchester in July this year and tours into 2025. Click here to check out all the tour dates and to book tickets because you can't stop the beat!
