ENDEARINGLY CHEEKY HEAVENLY INTERVENTION!
Every now and then a piece of theatre comes along that is so full of heart and honest emotion that you can't help but be completely swept away by it, and BE GAY, FOR GOD'S SAKE from Oh My My is one of those shows.
This is no ordinary play. It's an ambitious, time-bending journey that tackles huge themes with a perfect blend of genuine pathos and laugh-out-loud comedy.
From the moment the action began, I found this to be a captivating ride. A religious mother with an unaccepting heart experiences a divine intervention that sends her all the way back to her daughter's queer past in Inner Mongolia. It's a bold premise that is absolutely nailed.
The writing here is sharp, witty, and deeply affecting, effortlessly moving between moments that make you belly laugh and scenes that catch you in the throat.
The performances here are nothing short of spectacular. The cast is energetic, charismatic, and completely committed, breathing vibrant life into every character. The chemistry is palpable, and they navigate the shifts in tone with remarkable grace. It's a masterclass in ensemble acting that makes this chaotic beautiful story feel incredibly real and deeply human.
This is a powerful, brave new piece of writing that demands your attention. It's a defiant and loving exploration of acceptance, and the importance of finding your own way home. It's the kind of show that inspires you, moves you and reminds you why you love theatre.
This production puts the East Asian queer experience right at its forefront and is unapologetic in its refreshing representation.
In my opinion this show is unmissable. If the audience reaction is anything to go by, this show has the power to change hearts and minds. This is divine intervention of the best kind.
BE GAY, FOR GOD'S SAKE is a show that takes big swings, but most importantly, it lands them with a generous heart and a cheeky smile. The way the talented creative team weaves everything together with impressive dexterity means that what could have felt messy is instead a charming, fast-paced, and genuinely funny journey.
This is a powerful exploration of generational silence and the universal struggle for acceptance, wrapped up in a package of playful theatricality.
