WUTHERING HEIGHT AND WEST END LIGHTS

Earlier this week I was invited to the Underbelly Boulevard in Soho for AN EVENING WITHOUT KATE BUSH and frankly, I'm still floating somewhere over the cliffs of Dover!

I'll be honest, I walked into the theatre not entirely sure what to expect. I've always enjoyed a bit of Kate's music - who hasn't danced around their lounge to Wuthering Heights after a gin or two? - but I've never been a "Fishy" in a big way. I haven't spent years decoding lyrics or waiting on hillsides for a sighting!

But let me tell you, it didn't matter one jot. From the second the lights dimmed, Sarah-Louise Young welcomed us all into her wonderful world with open arms, and a bag full of costumes, wigs, and props that would rival RuPaul! Whether you're a die-hard devotee or someone who has only been made aware of her music because of Stranger Things, you are all part of the family here.

Now, how on earth do I define this show? It's a bit of a theatrical hallucination. Is it stand-up? Is it cabaret? Is it a tribute show? The truth is, it's all three, blended into a deliciously wacky cocktail that goes down a treat. This new, extended two-act version gives the piece lots of room to breathe, and I lived for every second of it.

What makes it so special is how much of herself Sarah-Louise pours into the evening. This isn't a dry impersonation, it's a love letter. I felt like I'd been invited into her secret circle as she shared stories not just about the elusive Kate, but about her own life and her deeply personal relationship with that legendary catalogue.

And can we talk about that voice? Honestly, it is nothing short of incredible. Sarah-Louise doesn't just mimic, she captures the very soul of the sound. Her vocals are hauntingly accurate, hitting those stratospheric notes with a purity that gave me actual goosebumps. She absolutely embodies the ethereal kookiness of Bush, but she never loses her own sparkling persona. Every movement and note feels meticulously thought out, yet the whole thing stays remarkably free, flowing, and fabulously chaotic.

The show is, quite simply, a tasty muffin of a production. It's baked to perfection in the Aga with oodles of personality, wit, and heart. Sarah-Louise is an absolute natural on the stage. She has this incredible knack for creating a warm, inclusive atmosphere, involving the audience in the fun from the very outset. She really made everyone feel like we're all "in" on the same joke. We're a little gang.

I spent the whole night Running Up That Hill of pure joy, and by the time the finale came around, I was ready to howl with the Hounds of Love. It was a Wow moment from start to finish. I never thought it would be something I'd say, but after witnessing this performance I'm proud to shout it from the rooftops - I'm definitely a fan of the Bush!

Performances continue until Sunday 26th April. Click here to get your tickets before they disappear into the Cloudbusting Soho skyline. It truly is The Sensual World of theatre at its best.

All views are my own and I pride myself on being honest, fair and free from influence. Theatre is subjective and it is important to remember that all views expressed are just those of one person.

My ticket for this performance of An Evening Without Kate Bush was gifted by Kevin Wilson Public Relations who invited me to watch the show in exchange for my honest review. The fact that my ticket was gifted played no part in the content of my review or the star rating given.
